Batteries that recharge over USB

I’m not sure if these new batteries (about 12 euros for a 2 pack) are revolutionary or not. It seems useful to be able to recharge while “on the go”, and it’s certainly the next best thing to having the old “two prong” built right in. Of course my main concern is, “when was the last time you travelled with any device that actually used AA batteries?”.
In fact the only thing I can think of currently in my entire house are remotes (that each use at least 2) and my kid’s RC car (which uses 6… I need two laptops or a spiffy USB hub to be able to handle that ;-) ).

Wednesday Morning Freeware Links

Having just (re) installed a couple of very handy apps, I thought you guys might find them useful as well:

  • Novell NetDrive - Although officially discontinued by Novell, this app is freely available for download many places on the net. It lets you “map” a Windows drive to any FTP, WebDAV, or iFolder site. It’s perfect for, say, having your webhost mapped to a local drive letter so you can easily edit and save files. It’s also great for remote backup.
  • Free Download Manager - Similar to FlashGet or Download Accelerator, this app “intercepts” download links from your browser and uses multiple connections to quickly and reliably save files to your machine. It also has handy browser extensions like adding a right click to “Download All using FDM” for quickly snagging, say, a page full of images or PDF links.
  • Syncback and AllwaySync - These are both free, excellent backup solutions for the home user. I used to use Allwaysync, and may go back to it, since it has excellent features like detecting when a removable drive is plugged in and kicking off a backup automatically. I’m trying Syncback currently for fun, and the main advantage I see so far is that it can do FTP backup directly (Allwaysync only does drive letters so I’d need to use Netdrive). Either way, they are both great options for protecting those gigs of digital photos you never get around to taming :)

Rowland Wilson on Composition

It’s a little known fact (i.e. the less you know the better) that I am trying to teach myself to design/draw/be somehow creative with varying degrees of success.

Mark Kennedy has recently been posting “cheat sheets” from some of the great comic and animation artists, for which I’m eternally grateful. You can find the latest post titled “Rowland Wilson on Composition”, and I encourage you to read the archive as well.

Scans of the cheat sheets are available as JPG (example below), and Josh Farkas has kindly been creating PDF’s as well.
