PearPC builds are updating again (for now)

Tag: General, UtilitiesRichard @ 3:18 pm
I finally got my Cygwin mess cleaned up, so my builds of PearPC are updating again! I still see quite a few hits coming in for these files, which is pretty interesting considering Apple’s switch to Intel is now public and looming.

Anyone have an opinion on whether I should keep the builds running? Post to comments…

    Hi!

Builds are good for me - I have no possible access to
CVS, so Yours builds are my only choice…

    Thanks, keep it running!

I appreciate any work done on PearPC. When iNTEL Macs ship, there will need to be compatability for older apps, either because the developers no longer exist, or because the user you are supporting dose not have access to an iNTEL Mac.

For myself I have to support Mac users, and have no budget allowence to purchase Apple Hardware. So even a PearPC which supports iNTEL Mac emulation (virtualisation) will be good.

In the long run I think any performance increase will come from doing more Vertualisation and less emulation anyway. If a direct interface to the Host OS graphics and sound can be found with breakout drivers utalising PPC breakout codes to native iNTEL instruction code, there will be less load on the CPU to allow for faster emulation.

Similar things are achieved in Executor and 8-bit emulators which used to run on DOS, which allowed the emulated system complete access to the Host PC. So you could write a program which you could load in your spectrum to utalise 40Meg HDD space and run at 640×400 in 256 colours on a VESA 2.0 display card. WinUAE has proved the most sucessfull and long running variant of that (or possibally any emulator aside from MAME) largly, IMHO, because of the OS integration with REAL hardware via Picasso96 Drivers and AHI interfaces to the PC sound and Graphics low level libaries (DirectX) and GusetOS Drivers. In fact I feel this kind of integration is essential as even VirtualPC isn’t really practical for productivity perposes until the VMAdons are installed. And they only do the same thing.

In any case UAE and Basalisk arn’t any less popular now that Amiga don’t exist or that Apple don’t use 68k processors any more, why should PearPC be any different?

Keep working on PearPC. Maybe we can have it install direct from the OS X discs without formating first, have access to virtual folders on our FAT or NTFS drives, Clipboard communication, Drag’n'Drop file transfer, better support for OS 9 and 10.4, seemless network integration (without faffing with TAP) and a GUI frontend that will work on all platforms… Perhappse based on the XUI that Mozilla developed.

Here’s to the bright and shining future of PearPC.
    :D

Hi, I really appreciate your work for PearPC. I would really like to see builds keep coming even when the Intel Mac is out. It will probably be the only way to run Mac on a PC because of all the protections and crap to run a Mac on a normal PC. It would also be nice if PearPC would later support the x86 Mac (if that’s possible - via a plugin or something).

Am I able to install Tiger with this version without a problem - I am wanting to install it as soon as I can. If it is possible could you give me some pointers and stuff I should be sure to do etc (or guides).

    Thanks

Whoohoo! PearPC 0.4 Final is out at sourceforge!
Will CVS be based off of this now?

  5. Richard says:

    Khan,

I’m still pulling the “latest” code, so as far as I know it is now 0.4 :) Please let me know if you see otherwise!

  6. Gerf says:

Keep the builds going please. they are handy

    I have a 128kb ROM, a 136kb ROM, a 256 kb ROM and a 4M ROM, but basilisk needs 512kb or 1M ROM to work, oh the irony :)
    thanks gerf

    PLEASE make the BUILDS again!

    Or has it died?

Not everyone runs a SSE2/SSE3 CPU

    PearPC is great!!!

  8. WHD says:

Is there no future for PearPC and if not, what is out there is better than PearPC???

  9. Richard says:

    Hey all,

I’m still not having any luck getting the code back to start up builds. If anyone has any suggestions I’m open to ideas.
