Good Eats!

Tag: GeneralRichard @ 10:07 pm

Today I had the awesome opportunity to listen to a Q&A session and get my books signed by Alton Brown of the FoodTV show Good Eats.

Skype is pretty freaking awesome!

Tag: GeneralRichard @ 1:43 pm

So I installed Skype and it works REALLY well!

My username is “rtgoodwin“, and I set it up to have an answering machine, so call me! You can see my status to the right and if you have Skype installed, clicking the icon should call me.

I won’t promise to answer but I think it would be really cool if you guys would leave me some messages :-) :-)

Batch Transfer

Tag: General, UtilitiesRichard @ 9:15 am

Neat little shell extension that lets you queue up a bunch of files to copy and then execute the copy. Only supports a single destination though…Anyone know of another that can queue up a bunch of source/destination pairs?

Get it here

1 Tablespoons chives
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
2 cups mixed Italian cheeses of your choice

The Mac mini is the best computer ever…

Tag: GeneralRichard @ 7:52 pm

…is what I’ll be saying when one of my avid Apple readers offers to donate one to me :-)

Seriously it looks mighty cool. I’m usually opposed to solutions you can’t tinker with, but…it’s a Mac and I want one sooo bad :-)

[re]Starting School

Tag: General, SchoolRichard @ 10:09 am

I set out bravely to prove that the old dog/new trick paradigm is a falsification! Of course I’m not that old (28) and community college is not exactly a new trick, but nonetheless. Wish me luck, and expect either fascinating school related posts or dead silence because I’m face down in books ;-) All of the courses are distance learning/online, so it’s going to be interesting to see how well I work w/ the format.

My course schedule:

  • GOVT2305 - US Gov I
  • HIST1301 - US Hist I
  • COSC1315 - Fundamentals of Computer Programming (I may know a bit about this one…)

If any of you intrepid readers are from Austin, I’ll be attending the fine Austin Community College.

New Plugin: ShowOnFrontPage

Tag: GeneralRichard @ 8:43 pm

Sometimes I find myself wanting to hide a post from the front page. I find that WP is so quick to post to, that I’m often tossing things into it via the “Press It” bookmarklet, but I don’t always want the whole world to see them front and center :-)

So I created the ShowOnFrontPage plugin to remedy it. It will add a checkbox to the Post Status field called “Show on front page” which will be checked by default for all posts. Uncheck it and voila no more post on the front page :-) Don’t worry, it will still show up under whatever category you posted it to…

Please please please test carefully and abundantly :-) I believe that it requires 1.3+, so please try it with that version before getting too upset!

Update (8/12/05): Help! It seems the plug-in is not working correctly on releases after 1.5, including. If anyone can help me update it, I would be most appreciative. My new job and hyperactive kid are leaving me no time at all! :) If you are a plugin author that knows what might have changed in the loop structure, let me know….

Update (9/14/05):
Super user Steve Carson updated the plugin to 0.3.1 and hopefully fixed compatibility issues and a bug or two. Feedback welcomed on the updated plugin!

Update (1/16/08):
Finally noticed and updated per the comment by Viktor below. Now posts no longer disappear when moderated comments are approved. Yikes :)

Download the plugin here: ShowOnFrontPage Plugin

(P.S. I’ve added my Amazon wish list to the sidebar, and a PayPal donation link below. I expect nothing, but would be delighted by anything :) )
